Visconti Purple

Visconti Purple is the first Visconti ink I’ve reviewed and there’s no better way to describe it than molto bene!

Visconti offers a limited range of colors that covers all the basics – black, blue, bordeaux, green, purple, sepia and turquoise. Each color is available in a 40ml bottle or short standard international cartridges. The V shaped bottle perfectly matches Visconti’s overall aesthetic, but it’s a shame they switched it from a glass bottle to a plastic one. At $17.50 and $6.90 respectively, it is not an inexpensive ink, but you often get what you pay for. This review was done with a Sailor Pro Gear F, Lamy Safari B, and is on Rhodia No. 18 blank paper.

I find Visconti purple to be similar to a royal purple. It is a rich colored ink that doesn’t go into the realm of pastel. With a fine nib the ink did not shade well, but a greater degree of shading was achieved in a broader nib. The color was uniform no matter what the nib, and the ink is fairly matte.

Visconti purple was a very well behaved ink. It had good flow, no feathering or bleedthrough, and was quick to dry. Shading and saturation were on the moderate side, and clean up was a breeze. Although I wouldn’t consider it water resistant, it was still easy to make out my writing after the water test.

There certainly isn’t anything flashy about Visconti purple, but it is a really nice color that just writes well. Some purples can make your handwriting look like a middle schooler with a gel pen, but Visconti purple had a professional look, even if you might not use it in the workplace.

As with any ink review, the pen, paper, and person doing the writing will influence the way the ink looks. If you’re not sure about a color, try a sample to see if it’s the color for you.

Ink it Up!
