thINKthursday – Montblanc Emerald

We’re traveling back in time to 2018, when Emerald Green was Montblanc’s color of the year. Emerald Green appears just as its name would suggest, but with some great properties. The ink comes in Montblanc’s square 50ml fluted glass bottle that is almost as pretty as the ink itself. If you’re on the go, the ink is also available in short international ink cartridges. This review was done with a Sailor Pro Gear F, Lamy Studio B and on Rhodia blank No.18 paper.

Emerald Green is true to its name, leaning a little t0ward the pastel side. The ink has some decent shading and a similar range of colors in both a fine and broad nib. At its lightest, the ink is a minty seafoam green. It shades to a jade green and then a traditional emerald. At its darkest, it can get into some pine green hues. The ink is matte and has no sheen when used on Rhodia paper.

Similar to the other Montblanc inks I’ve reviewed recently, Emerald Green has great properties. It had good flow with no feathering or bleedthrough on Rhodia paper. The ink is moderately saturated with good dry times at 15-25 seconds. While the ink didn’t have any water resistance, cleanup was easy.

I think Montblanc did a nice job with Emerald Green – it’s not earth-shattering, but it’s far from bad. Like most other Montblanc ink, it works wonderfully in your pen. While several other brands have produced inks that are very similar in hue, heavy shading gives this ink a lot of personality.

As with any ink review, the pen, paper, and person doing the writing will influence the way the ink looks. If you’re not sure about a color, try a sample to see if it’s the one for you.
