Lamy Agate combines the grace of graphite with the permanence of ink! The LAMY Crystal ink series comes in a beautiful 30ml, rounded triangular glass bottle with a generous opening. This review was done with a Pilot Metropolitan F, Lamy Safari B and on Rhodia blank No.18 paper.

Lamy Agate is named for a type of chalcedony that is known for its vivid bands of colors. As an ink, it has moderate levels of shading which allow you to add some variety to your writing. A fine nib shows off a medium gray, while a broad nib brings out the darker tones.

While Lamy Agate dried quickly in a fine nib at 10 seconds, it is much juicier in a broad nib taking up to 30 seconds to dry. While not completely water resistant, the writing remains very legible after contact with water and leaves behind a fairly light spot of color. This ink has low feathering and bleedthrough, has good flow, and is easy to clean up.

Lamy Agate was an interesting treat to work with! I didn’t expect to enjoy a gray ink but I have proudly added it to my ink stash. It may even get put into one of my daily use pens this year!

As with any ink review, the pen, paper, and person doing the writing will influence the way the ink looks. If you’re not sure about a color, try a sample to see if it’s the one for you.
