thINKthursday – Platinum Khaki Black
Like it’s namesake, Platinum Khaki Black is a professional ink that’ll look great anywhere!
Platinum Khaki Black is a muted grey-brown with iron gall properties. That means this ink will fade to a near-black over time and it is likely at least partially water resistant. It comes in a 60ml, bulging cube-shaped glass bottle. These bottles come with a goblet-shaped plastic insert that helps to collect the last drops of ink. Many people swear by these inserts, however it is pretty easy (if a bit messy) to remove if it doesn’t work with your pen.
The Platinum Black series of inks is full of subtle hues with depth and complexity, and Khaki Black definitely toes that line! It’s a medium brown, definitely warmer than Platinum Sepia Black, but still far from a golden brown or an amber. Like its namesake, it’s a perfect neutral that will match nicely with pretty much any pen. The color was a uniform taupe in both a fine and broad nib, but the broad nib did unlock a nice maple brown color where the ink flow was a little heavier. Larger swabs brought out a deep black-brown that you might encounter while using the ink for art or with a flex nib.
Platinum Khaki Black was a well-behaved ink with good flow and no feathering or bleedthrough on Rhodia paper. It was a little bit on the drier side, but not to the point where it caused any problems (although I think I preferred it in a broader nib). Dry times were excellent at 15 to 25 seconds! The black pigments in this ink were waterproof while the brown pigments were not. This could come in handy as the writing was still clearly legible after the water test, or it could be used for a beautiful effect in artwork! Because of that iron gall black pigment, you’ll want to clean any pen inked with Khaki Black a little more often than usual, but clean-up wasn’t particularly difficult.
It’s rare to encounter a waterproof ink that isn’t just your average blue or black, so Platinum’s black line is really exciting! While it wasn’t fully unchanged by water, the writing was still 100% legible and actually has a beautiful color-washed effect that is unique to this line. Whether you want an ink for the art studio or the office, Platinum Khaki Black won’t let you down!
As with any ink review, the pen, paper, and person doing the writing will influence the way the ink looks. If you’re not sure about a color, try a sample to see if it’s the one for you, or see how it measures up against your favorites using our ink tool.
