Sailor Shikiori Oku-Yama is a beautiful burgundy that sheens a regal green-gold. The Shikiori line comes in Sailor’s recognizable 20ml glass, rectangular bottle that makes the pen filling process easy, and Sailor Shikiori Oku-Yama is also available in cartridges. This review was done with a Pilot Metropolitan F, Lamy Safari B and on Rhodia blank No.18 paper.

Oku-Yama roughly translates to Remote Mountain, and the burgundy color reminds me of a cloudy sun silhouetted behind a distant peak. The green-gold sheen adds a lot of dimension, offering a more interesting writing experience than a standard burgundy. Sailor Shikiori Oku-Yama stays fairly consistent in both a fine and broad nib, though a juicy pen may offer a hint of sheen in larger format nibs such as a stub.

Sailor inks always provide a wonderful writing experience and Oku-Yama continues this trend. This ink had good flow, with no feathering or bleedthrough on Rhodia paper. The dry times averaged 20-30 seconds and while not water resistant, the splashes of water still allowed some readable text. Clean up was as easy as one might expect from Sailor inks.

Warmer than a typical wine-red ink, Sailor Shikiori Oku-Yama will enchant you with its deep, dark hues and unique green sheen. Personally, I adore a rich and moody red, which makes this an easy choice for my own ink collection!

As with any ink review, the pen, paper, and person doing the writing will influence the way the ink looks. If you’re not sure about a color, try a sample to see if it’s the one for you.
